President's Report - February 2023

President's Update:

January was a great month for the Younger Member Forum! We held a combined activity with the Structural Engineering Association of Utah and invited Brent Maxfield and John Richardson for a lecture on Earthquake Research. We had a great turnout with 32 attendees. We'll be rooting for Brent and John when they complete their research and start presenting to the public about the importance of earthquake resistant structures.

In related news, our thoughts are with those in Turkey who are suffering from structural failures after the 7.8 earthquake that hit the area over the weekend. Tragedies such as this highlight our important role as civil engineers to keep the public safe.

Looking forward, in February we will be celebrating Engineers' Week (E-Week) by putting together Outreach Kits for our K-12 Outreach Team. Our event is on Thursday, February 23rd from 6:30–7:30 p.m. at Ensign Engineering (45 W Sego Lily Drive, Sandy UT). Dinner will be provided and we’ll have our K-12 Outreach Captain Alex Yanez there to let everyone know how to get involved and give back to our community. He has been meeting with the Jordan Education Foundation S.T.E.M. Committee to look for volunteer opportunities and organize scholarships for K-12 students. Way to go Alex!

Register for the STEAM Event here.

This month will also hold the 2023 Western Region Younger Member Council (WRYMC). Taylor Hall, our Past President, will be attending the 2023 WRYMC in Orange County this month to pass the gavel on to the Orange County YMF. We loved the opportunity to host the 2022 WRYMC in Park City and wish Orange County great luck in the month ahead.

Lastly, I am coordinating with our ASCE Utah State Government Relations Committee Chair Katherine Colburn for the ASCE Legislative Fly-In in Washington D.C. on March 1-3. We will be speaking with representatives about issues in civil engineering and ASCE's priority issues, which you can find information about here.

Our team is hard at work coordinating with our PE Review volunteers to set the dates for our Spring PE Review Course. Be on the lookout for information soon! We are also still searching for a President Elect and beginning to look for officers for the 2023-2024 year. It’s a great time to get involved, if you’re interested please send an email to asceutahymf@gmail.com.

Onwards and upwards! Thanks for all your interest and involvement in the Younger Member Forum.

Anna Roberts, ENV. SP., E.I.T.
